Femi Adesina, the former special adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari, sheds light on how the Nigerian government did a favor to Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). In his book, “Working with Buhari: Reflections of a Special Adviser, Media and Publicity (2015-2023),” Adesina disclosed that Kanu was extradited to Nigeria to protect him from potential elimination.
Kanu, who had become a fugitive, was extradited to Nigeria in June 2021 after repeatedly violating bail conditions on numerous charges including terrorism, treasonable felony, managing an unlawful society, and more. Adesina also quoted President Buhari’s stance on the matter, stating that the best course of action was for Kanu to be tried through the legal system rather than creating a negative impression of the country.
He further emphasized that despite the serious implications and the demands made by some parties, the government took steps to ensure Kanu’s safety by bringing him back to Nigeria. Chief Mbazulike Amaechi, a former first republic minister of aviation, led a delegation to the presidential villa to appeal for the unconditional release of Kanu, expressing concern about the situation in the eastern region.
Adesina’s book also contains other notable events, including an account of how President Buhari narrowly averted a potential air disaster in 2015 as well as details surrounding Senator Bukola Saraki’s emergence as the Senate leader.
In a separate development, Nnamdi Kanu dissolved his legal team and medical team due to their failure to provide a medical report supporting his alleged heart-related ailment following the Supreme Court’s ruling compelling his ongoing trial on terrorism charges.
All these revelations paint a detailed picture of the events surrounding Nnamdi Kanu, his extradition to Nigeria, and the government’s handling of the situation. The book provides a rare insider’s view of the decision-making processes and challenges faced during President Buhari’s tenure, offering insights into significant events in Nigeria’s recent political history.
