Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), recently made it clear that he would not engage in any political feud with President Bola Tinubu, the leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Despite their different political affiliations, Governor Eno emphasized the importance of unity during a gathering where members from opposition parties, including the APC, Young Progressives Party (YPP), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), officially joined the PDP.
During the event at the Ibom Hall ground in Uyo, Governor Emo urged new party members to refrain from bringing negativity into the party, especially through disrespectful behavior towards political figures. He emphasized the need for leaders and members of opposing parties to cooperate with the State government in order to maintain a harmonious relationship between the State and the Federal Government.
Governor Eno made a commitment to never work against the central government, stating that such actions would only strain the relationship between the state and the center. He highlighted that competition with the Federal Government could lead to wasteful use of resources that may hinder the state’s development and the well-being of its people, as outlined in his administration’s ‘Arise Agenda’.
The governor also shared that resources from the central government have been effectively utilized during his tenure of the past 10 months to improve physical infrastructure such as roads, enhance social services like education and healthcare, ensure pension payments for retired civil servants, and support the elderly. He stressed that maintaining positive political attitudes is crucial to sustaining this effective collaboration with the central government.
In a statement quoted by Leadership, Governor Eno said, “I cannot fight President Tinubu, we cannot fight the centre. We have only one President of Nigeria and we must not attack or insult him. We will not use Akwa Ibom’s money to fight the centre because if you fight the centre, the centre can no longer hold. You can’t fight the person that gives you money and resources and expect him to continue to give you. If we use Akwa Ibom money to create trouble with the centre, and use it to be traveling to Abuja every day, it is the people that will suffer.”
At a recent state executive council meeting, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom acknowledged that people with limited financial resources often do not include eggs in their meals. Despite economic challenges in the country, several state governments have been implementing measures to alleviate the burden on their residents. Governor Eno expressed support for a proposed bill to establish a Bulk Purchase Agency, which would acquire staple food items in large quantities and sell them at reduced prices to those in need.
In conclusion, Governor Umo Eno’s decision to prioritize collaboration with the central government over political feuds demonstrates his commitment to the development and well-being of the people of Akwa Ibom State. By emphasizing unity and constructive engagement with political stakeholders, Governor Eno aims to foster a conducive environment for progress and growth in the state.
