Nigerian Senator Orji-Uzor Kalu, representing Abia State, has encouraged farmers in his district to return to agriculture to cope with the economic challenges facing the country. Serving as the senator for Abia North District, Mr. Kalu expressed this during a press briefing in Abuja and further highlighted his message on his verified Facebook page on Monday. Along with his statements, he shared pictures captured while working with farmers on their fields.
In recent times, Nigerians have been grappling with severe economic hardships as the prices of essential commodities continue to rise, prompting protests nationwide. Many attribute this hardship to President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove the crude oil subsidy on May 29. Despite these challenges, Senator Kalu emphasized the importance of agriculture in providing food security, creating job opportunities, and stimulating economic growth. He urged people to utilize the fertile lands in their region by cultivating high-demand crops as a means of sustenance during these uncertain economic times.
His call for a return to agriculture resonated with local farmers, who saw it as a viable solution amidst economic uncertainties. As a result, many farmers in his district have already started planting crops such as cassava, maize, and vegetables. Senator Kalu also expressed his commitment to support the farmers by providing funding and training, a continuation of his efforts through his foundation that had previously boosted the agricultural sector in his constituency, enhancing food production and improving the livelihoods of farmers.
To further assist the farmers, Mr. Kalu pledged to collaborate with agricultural experts to ensure the adoption of modern farming techniques and technologies, enhancing productivity. He appealed to the federal government to introduce agricultural programs that would support rural farmers in need of assistance. He also encouraged the farmers to maintain hope in Nigeria and pray for the success of the Tinubu administration, assuring them that the ongoing hardships would soon be alleviated.
As a leader committed to the welfare of his constituents, Senator Orji-Uzor Kalu’s advocacy for a return to agriculture comes at a crucial time when sustainable solutions are needed to address the economic challenges facing Nigerians. Through his support and empowerment initiatives, he aims to not only boost food production and livelihoods but also promote economic resilience and self-sufficiency among farmers in his district.
