The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) secretariat at Yaba, Lagos was not sealed by the police on Monday, contrary to rumours circulating. According to SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police spokesperson in Lagos State, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Adegoke Fayoade, only went to the NLC secretariat to address protesters. He clarified that the heightened security presence in various hotspots around Lagos on Monday was not due to sealing off the NLC secretariat.

On Monday, heavily armed police operatives were observed at Gani Fawehinmi Park, Ojota, and other parts of Lagos in anticipation of a planned protest by organised labour. The NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had scheduled a nationwide strike for Feb. 27 and Feb. 28 to protest the hardships faced by Nigerians due to the increased prices of goods and services resulting from the removal of fuel subsidy and the depreciation of the naira. However, the TUC withdrew from the scheduled protest on Saturday.

Hundeyin explained that the police deployed proactively to the NLC secretariat and other hotspots to ensure security for the planners of the strike and prevent any attempts by hoodlums to hijack the procession. The Commissioner of Police, Mr Fayoade, personally addressed the protesters before the procession started, ensuring a peaceful event without any incidents. The police closely monitored the security operation and the protest, with the procession moving from Yaba to Maryland without causing traffic disruptions or engaging in violent activities. The protesters cooperated well, and the police provided adequate security throughout the procession to ensure its smooth progression.

In conclusion, Hundeyin stated that all protesters have dispersed peacefully, marking a successful day. The police were able to maintain order and prevent any disruptions during the protest. Overall, the security measures taken by the police were effective in ensuring the safety of all involved in the demonstration.

It is essential to note that the information provided is based on the clarification given by the police spokesperson in Lagos State regarding the security measures taken during the planned protest by organised labour in Lagos. The peaceful outcome of the protest reflects the cooperation between the protesters and the police in maintaining law and order during such events.
