Women living with hearing impairment in Niger State are advocating for equal opportunities in marriage and healthcare despite their condition. Led by Salamatu Hammed, these women are asserting their worth and capabilities, emphasizing that they are just as capable of building healthy families as anyone else.
During the celebration of World Hearing Day in Minna, the capital of Niger State, Ms. Hammed appealed to men to consider deaf women as potential life partners. She highlighted that deaf women are marriage materials and can give birth to normal children like any other women. This plea for acceptance and inclusivity underscores the importance of breaking stereotypes and promoting equality in relationships.
Furthermore, Ms. Hammed called on the government to provide interpreters at public health institutions in the state to ensure that individuals with hearing problems have access to quality healthcare. Sharing her personal experience of losing her voice due to a delivery operation, she emphasized that women with hearing impairment can still have healthy children. This challenges misconceptions and highlights the resilience of these women despite their challenges.
Dr. Sidi Maku, an Audiology expert and the permanent secretary of Special Duties in the state Ministry of Health and Hospital Services, expressed concern over the neglect faced by individuals with hearing challenges in Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of raising awareness about hearing impairment and its causes, such as exposure to loud music or inappropriate ear cleaning methods.
Dr. Maku revealed the scarcity of audiologists in Niger State, with only three active professionals serving the ENT clinic. He stressed the need for more resources and support from the government and corporate bodies to assist individuals with hearing problems. The increasing cost of hearing aids poses a financial burden on those in need, further highlighting the urgent need for intervention and support.
The event organized by the Women Advocate for Gender Solutions and Mentorship (WAGS-M), in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), focused on the theme, “Changing Mindsets, Let’s Make Ear and Hearing Care a Reality for All.” The free screening exercise and distribution of drugs aimed to provide assistance and support to individuals with hearing difficulties.
In conclusion, the voices of women living with hearing impairment in Niger State resonate with a call for inclusivity, understanding, and support. Their advocacy not only challenges societal perceptions but also underscores the resilience and determination of individuals facing hearing challenges. It is imperative for stakeholders at all levels to prioritize the needs of these individuals and work towards creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.
