The Directorate of Road Traffic Services, DRTS, has announced plans to deploy Artificial Intelligence (AI) at certain road intersections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to improve traffic flow. Kalu Emetu, the Head of Public Relations and Enlightenment at DRTS, FCT, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja. He explained that AI is a robot that can think like a human and take on human responsibilities.
Emetu highlighted the necessity of deploying AI due to the increasing congestion in the city center. The AI will complement the efforts of DRTS personnel in ensuring that motorists comply with traffic rules and regulations. However, the machine has not been put to use yet as the partners have not finalized their arrangements.
Once the partners conclude their arrangements, the AI will contribute to a seamless traffic flow in the FCT, especially in the city center. The primary responsibility of DRTS is to monitor traffic and ensure free movement in the city. The organization has already completed the necessary installations and recordings, and it only requires a little time to perfect the process before the AI is operational.
Emetu also mentioned that traffic offenders will be required to pay fines for traffic offenses committed, including those during the test run. The service will start by contacting the offenders to notify them about the traffic violations and the corresponding fines.
He expressed confidence that upon completion of the project, the interaction between DRTS personnel and motorists will significantly decrease. The implementation of new technology will provide motorists more confidence than the traditional approach of interacting with personnel. The AI will be responsible for monitoring traffic activities, identifying offenders, and sending notifications to their mobile phones for the necessary fines. This process will align with the e-booking and e-ticketing systems recently launched by DRTS.
Emetu emphasized that when motorists pay the fines, they will have no doubts about where the money has been sent. This system will streamline the process of paying fines to the government through various payment channels.
In conclusion, the deployment of AI in traffic management by DRTS is poised to revolutionize the monitoring and enforcement of traffic rules and regulations in the FCT. The integration of AI technology is expected to significantly improve traffic flow, reduce human error in monitoring and enforcement, and streamline the process of traffic violation fines. Once operational, the AI system will enhance the overall efficiency of road traffic management in the FCT.
