The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Command in Ogun emphasized the compulsory use of speed limit devices for both commercial and private vehicles as a means of reducing road crashes in the country. Anthony Uga, the FRSC’s Sector Commander in Ogun, highlighted this requirement during the command’s first-quarter workshop in 2024, focusing on the theme of “Aggressive Public Enlightenment on the merits of Speed Limit Device Installation in all Vehicles as a Panacea to Stemming RTC in Ogun.”
Mr. Uga pointed out that speeding contributed to over 90% of road traffic crashes (RTCs) in the state and emphasized the importance of the speed limit device in saving lives. He urged motorists to comply with the speed limit device policy and announced that the FRSC would conduct aggressive enforcement on the use of these devices. Only accredited vendors authorized by the FRSC are allowed to install speed limit devices in vehicles, and the list of approved vendors can be found on the FRSC website.
Contrary to misconceptions, speed limit devices do not damage vehicles as they are not connected to the engine. Vehicles are not permitted to exceed the speed of 100 kilometers per hour (km/h) as per the regulations set by the FRSC. Mr. Uga expressed the organization’s commitment to re-engineering its activities to address road safety challenges and emphasized the importance of collaboration with transport unions to ensure all vehicles are equipped with speed limit devices.
Furthermore, the FRSC reiterated its dedication to maintaining highway safety and urged motorists to always adhere to traffic rules and regulations. Jamiu Popoola, representing the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), supported the enforcement of speed limit devices for all vehicles, not just commercial ones. The union expressed its readiness to assist the FRSC in achieving the objectives of installing speed limit devices in commercial vehicles.
In conclusion, the FRSC is actively promoting the use of speed limit devices to enhance road safety and reduce the incidence of road traffic crashes. By enforcing these regulations and collaborating with stakeholders in the transportation sector, the FRSC aims to create a safer environment for all road users. It is essential for motorists to embrace this initiative and prioritize obeying traffic laws to ensure their safety and the safety of others on the roadways.
