The chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Mr. Philip Aivoji, has been kidnapped. The abduction took place on Thursday, January 25, along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

Mr. Aivoji had attended a stakeholder meeting organized by Governors Seyi Makinde and Ademola Adeleke in Oyo State, as confirmed by the party’s state publicity secretary, Hon. Hakeem Amode.

The suspected kidnappers have demanded a ransom of N200 million for the release of the PDP chairman. According to a member of the party, the kidnappers are requesting the hefty sum for the release of the party leaders.

Hon. Amode, outraged by the incident, expressed disappointment in the government’s inability to address the issue of kidnapping in the country. He called for swift intervention from security agencies and governmental bodies at every tier to ensure Aivoji’s safe return.

Furthermore, a report from The Nation illustrated Amode’s appeal to the governments of Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos States, along with security agencies, to expedite efforts in securing the safe return of Mr. Aivoji to his family and well-wishers. He also emphasized the need for increased efforts from security agencies to rescue Aivoji from the criminals, calling on the public to support initiatives against such threats to innocent lives.

In another development related to kidnapping, a suspected notorious Abuja criminal, Chinaza Philip-Okoye, denied being a kidnapper in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). He claimed to be an armed robber who steals cars from people on the expressway.

The abduction of the PDP chairman is a testimony to the prevailing issue of kidnapping in Nigeria and highlights the urgent need for drastic measures to tackle the scourge. The call for a government-led intervention and security agencies’ swift action reflects the gravity of the situation and the demand for a coordinated effort to combat this menace.

It is disheartening that such violent incidents occur in the country, and the demand for a significant ransom underscores the severity and audacity of the criminal activities. This unfortunate event warrants a unified response from government authorities, security agencies, and the public to ensure the safe release of Mr. Aivoji.
