Gabriel Egbe, the Registrar of the University of Calabar (UniCal), responded to allegations of failed accreditation by stating that the institution had no record of such an occurrence. This statement came as a reaction to a warning reportedly issued by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) regarding the accreditation of Engineering courses at the university.

Mr. Egbe clarified that the publication, titled “Get Properly Accredited or Risk Blacklisting, Engineering Council warns UniCal, Adamawa Varsity,” attributed to COREN was false. He expressed surprise at why COREN would be associated with such a publication, especially considering COREN’s role in overseeing the professional accreditation of Engineering programs in Nigerian universities.

He emphasized that when COREN previously raised concerns about professional accreditation, they were informed that the National Universities Commission (NUC) must conduct accreditation before any professional body. Mr. Egbe highlighted that in November 2023, the NUC visited UniCal for accreditation of all programs, including those in the Faculty of Engineering, and the results are still pending.

The Registrar reiterated that UniCal has no history of failed accreditation in its engineering programs, contrary to what COREN may suggest. He explained that once the NUC provides accreditation results, COREN will be officially invited for professional accreditation at the university.

Mr. Egbe also mentioned that if COREN is impatient for the NUC results, they should formally reach out to UniCal with proposed visit dates, similar to other professional bodies. He urged COREN to exercise caution and refrain from tarnishing UniCal’s reputation under the guise of Council recommendations.

In conclusion, the Registrar urged COREN to prioritize the development and support of future engineering professionals rather than engaging in actions that could harm the institution’s image. Overall, he emphasized the importance of mutual respect and cooperation between academic institutions and professional bodies like COREN in ensuring quality education and accreditation processes.

In light of these clarifications, it is evident that UniCal remains committed to upholding academic standards and accreditation requirements, working collaboratively with regulatory bodies like COREN to ensure the quality of its Engineering programs.
