Mr. Na’Allah emphasized the importance of the institute in training publishers and filling the existing void in the industry. He highlighted the lack of institutions in the country that focus on training publishers, leading to a proliferation of substandard publications that do not meet academic standards. The establishment of the UIIPS aims to bridge this gap and produce top professionals in the field of publishing.
The institute will offer a professional Master’s degree program that will undergo constant review, research, and development to incorporate new ideas and strategies. Mr. Na’Allah encouraged organizations, agencies, and publishers to send their personnel for training at the institute, ensuring that they receive the best training available.
Furthermore, the Vice-Chancellor stressed the importance of collaboration with other publishing institutes globally to enhance the institute’s reputation and produce high-quality publications. He expressed the institute’s ambition to become the leading publishing institute in Africa, catering not only to Nigerian needs but also those of the entire continent.
The Director of the Institute, Emeritus Prof. Chris Ogbondah, outlined the program’s structure, which includes a 12-month professional Master’s degree with a practical internship component. The institute boasts state-of-the-art equipment, including computers and other publishing tools, to ensure that students have access to the necessary resources for their education.
Prof. Ogbondah highlighted the institute’s partnerships with international institutions, such as the University of Ghana, to bring in expert lecturers and enhance the students’ learning experience. He emphasized the institute’s focus on training individuals in editing, media content use, illustration, and other essential publishing skills.
The event culminated in the inauguration of the institute by the Vice-Chancellor, marking a significant milestone in UniAbuja’s commitment to addressing the training needs of the publishing industry in Nigeria and beyond.
In conclusion, the establishment of the International Institute for Publishing Studies at the University of Abuja represents a crucial step towards enhancing the quality of publications and professionals in the industry. By offering a comprehensive Master’s degree program and fostering partnerships with international institutions, the institute aims to become a leading publishing institute in Africa and contribute to the growth and development of the publishing sector on the continent.
