The United Nations (UN) has pledged its support to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Nigeria to help combat substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking in the country. The Deputy Secretary-General of the UN, Mrs. Amina Mohammed, made this commitment during a visit to the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja. She was accompanied by the UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr. Mohamed Malick Fall, who reaffirmed the UN’s support for the agency’s efforts.

Mrs. Mohammed highlighted the importance of addressing the root causes of drug abuse and trafficking, emphasizing the need for a multidimensional approach involving various sectors of government. She praised the NDLEA for its commitment to fighting drug-related crimes and expressed the UN’s readiness to assist in achieving the agency’s goals. She commended the Chairman and CEO of NDLEA, Brig-Gen Mohamed Marwa (Rtd), for his exemplary leadership and dedication to the agency’s mandate.

In response, Marwa expressed gratitude for the UN’s support and acknowledged the significance of having high-level UN officials visit the NDLEA headquarters. He emphasized the gravity of the challenges posed by drug abuse and trafficking to public health and national security in Nigeria. Despite the agency’s efforts in reducing both drug supply and demand, Marwa recognized the persistent threat posed by drug-related crimes.

Since assuming leadership of the NDLEA in 2021, Marwa has implemented measures to combat drug trafficking and abuse. The agency has made significant progress, with over 48,000 arrests, including high-profile drug traffickers. Additionally, thousands of tons of illicit drugs have been seized, and cannabis farms have been destroyed to disrupt the drug supply chain.

The UN’s support for the NDLEA underscores the global community’s commitment to addressing the challenges of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking. By collaborating with international partners, including the UN, the NDLEA aims to strengthen its efforts to create a drug-free society and ensure public health and safety in Nigeria.

Mrs. Mohammed reiterated the UN’s dedication to working with the Nigerian government and other stakeholders to tackle the complex issue of drug abuse. She emphasized the importance of upholding human dignity and promoting a greater sense of responsibility in addressing drug-related challenges. The UN’s partnership with the NDLEA reflects a shared commitment to achieving a better and safer Nigeria, both regionally and globally.

In conclusion, the collaboration between the UN and the NDLEA underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing the multifaceted challenges of drug abuse and trafficking. By working together, the UN and the NDLEA can make significant strides towards building a healthier and more secure future for Nigeria.
