Nigeria: Troops eliminate 286 terrorists, rescue 122 hostages in 1 week — Africa Links 24

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has reported that troops have had a highly successful week in combating terrorism in different areas of the country. In just one week, they eliminated 286 terrorists, apprehended 244 others, and rescued 122 kidnapped hostages. This update was given by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, during a briefing in Abuja. Additionally, troops apprehended 83 oil thieves, stopping them from stealing an estimated N2.5 billion worth of oil.

Furthermore, the troops recovered a significant amount of weapons and ammunition. This includes 587 assorted weapons and 7,943 assorted ammunition, which involved various types of rifles, guns, pistols, and ammunition rounds, as well as motorcycles and other related items.

In the North East region, Operation Hadin Kai’s troops neutralised 70 Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists, rescued 27 kidnapped hostages, and arrested 31 others. They also recovered large numbers of weapons and ammunition. In the North Central, troops from Operations Safe Haven and Whirl Stroke neutralised 19 insurgents, arrested 68 violent extremists, and rescued 13 kidnapped hostages. The North West also saw significant successes, with troops from Operation Hadarin Daji conducting successful operations against terrorists, resulting in numerous neutralisations and rescues.

In addition, troops of Operation Whirl Punch successfully ambushed terrorists in Kaduna state, neutralising 93 insurgents, arresting 32 violent extremists/terrorists, and rescuing 14 kidnapped hostages. The Niger Delta region also saw effective operations, including the discovery and destruction of multiple dugout pits, boats, storage tanks, cooking ovens, and illegal refining sites. Large quantities of stolen crude oil and illegally refined petroleum products were also recovered.

In the South East, troops from Operation UDO KA neutralised 39 insurgents, arrested 10 violent extremists, and recovered a significant amount of weapons and ammunition. All the recovered items, arrested suspects, and rescued hostages were handed over to the relevant authorities for further action.

Overall, the update on the operations of the armed forces portrays the success and effectiveness of the ongoing counterinsurgency operations across the country. These operations have led to numerous accomplishments in terms of neutralising terrorists, rescuing hostages, and recovering weapons, ammunition, and stolen or illegally refined oil products.
