The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto state has called for a thorough investigation into the unfortunate incident that occurred at the residence of Senator Aliyu Wamakko, resulting in the death of nine persons, including an officer of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Wamakko, a former governor of Sokoto state and the current senator representing Sokoto North senatorial district, reportedly experienced a stampede at his house while sharing a Ramadan package with the people.
The PDP expressed deep sympathy to the families of the deceased and wished for the quick recovery of those who were injured during the incident. Hassan Sahabi Sanyinnawal, the publicity secretary of the PDP, called on all relevant security agencies to investigate the matter thoroughly, with the aim of preventing such tragedies in the future.
During the stampede at Wamakko’s house, nine individuals lost their lives, while more than 30 people sustained injuries, as per a report by Leadership. This incident occurred during the distribution of Sallah goodies to the community members. The PDP highlighted that this was not the first time such an unfortunate situation had taken place at Wamakko’s residence and attributed it to poor arrangements that disregard the safety of human lives.
The party emphasized the need for better governance dividends that would uplift people out of poverty instead of sporadically distributing cash to them. The PDP stressed the importance of prioritizing the welfare and safety of citizens in all activities to avoid such tragedies in the future.
In a related event, four individuals lost their lives during an almsgiving zakat distribution in Bauchi state. Shafa Holding Company Plc was reportedly sharing the almsgiving at its headquarters along Jos Road when the tragic incident occurred. Additionally, a 17-year-old named Naima Abdullahi sustained injuries and was promptly taken to the hospital for treatment.
The PDP’s call for a comprehensive investigation into the stampede at Wamakko’s house underscores the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals during public gatherings and distributions.
