Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to partnering with investors to tap into the tourism potential of the state. Speaking at the International Tourism Summit (#ITSOYOSTATE 2024) held at the International Conference Center, University of Ibadan, Makinde reiterated his promise to support and collaborate with relevant stakeholders, fostering partnerships that will ensure sustainable development and the success of investments in the tourism sector.

The two-day summit aimed to bring together local and international stakeholders in the tourism industry to showcase the cultural diversity and tourism potential of Oyo State and leverage them for socio-economic development. Governor Makinde, addressing the theme “Repositioning Tourism as a Drive for Sustainable Development in Oyo State,” highlighted his administration’s focus on enhancing the connectivity of all zones to attract tourists and create a conducive environment for tourism to thrive, ultimately enhancing the experience for business travelers.

Governor Makinde outlined plans to improve infrastructure, such as fixing the roads leading to Ikere Gorge Dam and Eruwa Agribusiness Hub to facilitate the development of these sites by investors. He emphasized the importance of collaboration with local communities to promote and showcase these sites, recognizing the abundant opportunities in the tourism sector that, if properly harnessed, could lead to prosperity for the state.

He identified six major development sites in Oyo State, including the Ibadan Cultural Centre, Bower’s Tower, Eleyele Waterfront, Idere Hills, Iyake Suspended Lake, and Iyamapo Hills, as key areas for investment and development. Governor Makinde expressed appreciation to all delegates, investors, and participants present at the summit, affirming his commitment to ensuring the security of their investments.

Highlighting the necessity of unlocking the tourism potential of Oyo State, Governor Makinde emphasized the vital role of partnerships in achieving this goal. He outlined three types of partnerships available in Oyo State – Public Private Partnership, Public Development Partnership, and Hybrid Partnership – and stressed the government’s role in fostering sustainable development through these partnerships.

Governor Makinde provided insights into specific investment opportunities in the tourism sector, including projected entry points and expected profit margins for various sites and destinations. He underscored the importance of creating a conducive environment for investors, citing ongoing infrastructure projects to support investment ventures in areas such as the Film Village at Igbojaiye.

Various stakeholders, including the Minister of Tourism, Mrs. Lola Ade-John, and former governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke, commended the efforts of the Oyo State government in promoting tourism and emphasized the importance of continuous development in the tourism sector for economic growth and attracting investors. They called for sustained prioritization of tourism to boost the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and position it as a key tourism destination.

In conclusion, the participants at the summit acknowledged the significant strides made by the Oyo State government in rejuvenating and developing tourist sites and urged continued focus on tourism development to drive sustainable economic growth and benefit the local community. The collaborative efforts of the government, investors, and stakeholders are crucial in harnessing the tourism potential of Oyo State and positioning it as a thriving tourism hub.
