The Tiv Traditional Council (TTC) played a crucial role in brokering peace between Governor Hyacinth Alia and Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, who were previously embroiled in a political feud over the leadership of the North Central state. The conflict escalated when the Governor inaugurated a factional APC State Executive Council, prompting the police to intervene and take over the APC State Secretariat to prevent violence.

Concerned by the escalating crisis, the Tiv paramount ruler, Prof James Ayatse, and the TTC invited the two leaders to a closed-door meeting in Gboko, the headquarters of the Tiv race, to address their differences. Following the meeting, Ayatse revealed that both Alia and Akume had agreed to set aside their political differences and work together for the progress of Benue.

The leaders agreed to reconcile their differences and collaborate for the benefit of the people. They made a commitment to bury their past grievances and move forward as a unified team to promote peace and development in Benue. The TTC expressed satisfaction with the leaders’ resolutions and believed that they would uphold their commitments made in the presence of the traditional rulers.

During the reconciliation meeting, Senator Barnabas Gemade stood as Governor Alia’s witness, while Michael Aondoakaa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, acted as Senator Akume’s witness. However, both the SGF and the Governor chose not to speak with the press following the meeting.

The Tiv Traditional Council’s intervention and successful mediation between Governor Alia and Senator Akume have paved the way for renewed cooperation and unity in Benue. The leaders have demonstrated their willingness to work together for the common good, setting aside personal grievances for the benefit of the state.

Moving forward, it is expected that Governor Alia and Senator Akume will honor their commitments and collaborate effectively to foster peace and development in Benue. The support of the traditional rulers and the community will be instrumental in holding the leaders accountable for their promises and ensuring that the spirit of reconciliation endures.

In conclusion, the peace agreement brokered by the Tiv Traditional Council marks a significant step towards resolving the political differences between Governor Hyacinth Alia and Senator George Akume. By putting aside their past grievances and committing to work together, the leaders have set a positive example for unity and cooperation in Benue.
