President Bola Tinubu has taken a decisive step towards revamping primary healthcare in Nigeria by approving the establishment of the National Health Fellows Programme. This initiative aims to enhance the quality and accessibility of healthcare services by upgrading existing primary healthcare centers and constructing over 8,800 new centers across all local government areas in the country. The program will also introduce new social accountability mechanisms to ensure transparency and efficiency in healthcare delivery.

Under this program, young Nigerian fellows will be recruited and deployed to all 774 local government areas in the country. These fellows will serve as fiduciary agents responsible for monitoring and tracking the development and performance of primary healthcare centers. Their primary task will be to assess the performance of these centers in relation to the financial resources allocated to them.

The National Health Fellows Programme will be housed within the Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) coordination office under the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. The fellows will be carefully selected, trained, remunerated, and provided with the necessary tools to effectively monitor Basic Health Care Provision Fund-supported health facilities nationwide.

President Tinubu, who serves as the African Union Champion for Human Resources in Healthcare, has expressed confidence in the abilities of young Nigerians to drive positive change in the healthcare sector. He believes that their active engagement in monitoring and evaluating health reforms in their respective areas will lead to a new era of high-quality healthcare services accessible to all citizens across the country.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, announced this groundbreaking initiative on April 8, 2024. The program represents a significant step towards achieving universal healthcare coverage and improving healthcare outcomes for all Nigerians.

In addition to the National Health Fellows Programme, President Tinubu continues to champion various initiatives aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery, including the establishment of new primary healthcare centers and the implementation of social accountability mechanisms. These efforts underscore his commitment to promoting the well-being of all citizens and ensuring equitable access to healthcare services.

As the country embarks on this ambitious healthcare transformation journey, the active involvement of young Nigerians through the National Health Fellows Programme will play a crucial role in driving positive change and improving health outcomes at the grassroots level. Through their dedicated monitoring and evaluation activities, these fellows will contribute to the realization of a healthcare system that is efficient, transparent, and responsive to the needs of the Nigerian population.

As the nation looks ahead to a future of improved healthcare services and better health outcomes, initiatives like the National Health Fellows Programme are poised to make a lasting impact on the country’s healthcare landscape. By empowering young Nigerians to take an active role in shaping the future of healthcare delivery, President Tinubu’s vision of a world-class healthcare system for all Nigerians is steadily becoming a reality.
