President Bola Tinubu has made a significant announcement regarding the full implementation of the Steve Oronsaye panel report, which was submitted 12 years ago. The report has recommended the scrapping and merging of several government agencies and parastatals due to overlapping functions. Among the key agencies suggested to be scrapped are the National Hajj Commission and Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission.

According to reports from The Punch, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated that if the recommendations in the report are fully implemented, 220 out of the 541 government agencies will be scrapped and merged. This decision will also result in the dismissal of at least 102 heads of government agencies and parastatals.

The Oronsaye report highlighted that many government agencies and parastatals have overlapping functions, leading to inefficiencies and redundancy. As a result, key recommendations were discussed at the Federal Executive Council meeting, including the merging of agencies like the National Salaries, Income, and Wages Commission with the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission. Other mergers and reorganizations were proposed for entities such as the Infrastructure Concession and Regulatory Commission, the National Human Rights Commission, and the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate.

Furthermore, the Oronsaye report suggested the scrapping of seven key agencies, including the National Economic Intelligence Committee, the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission (NCPC), and the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON). The report also recommended merging agencies like NEMA and the National Commission for Refugees to form the National Emergency and Refugee Management Commission, among others.

President Bola Tinubu’s decision to implement the full Oronsaye report will result in the reduction of federal government agencies and parastatals from 263 to 161. This move aims to streamline operations, eliminate duplication of functions, and enhance efficiency within the government structure.

BudgIT Nigeria shared a quick infographic of the report, highlighting the proposed changes in the government agencies and parastatals. The decision to implement the full report was reportedly reached at a federal executive council meeting, signifying a commitment to improving governance and resource utilization.

In conclusion, the full implementation of the Steve Oronsaye panel report under the directive of President Bola Tinubu represents a significant step towards restructuring and optimizing government agencies and parastatals in Nigeria. By streamlining operations, eliminating redundancies, and enhancing efficiency, this move aims to promote good governance and effective service delivery to the citizens.
