Former Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu was laid to rest in a final burial ceremony attended by President Bola Tinubu, governors, members of the National Assembly, and other dignitaries. The ceremony, held in Owo, was a somber event as mourners paid their last respects to the late governor.
President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, expressed that Nigeria had lost a man who left behind a legacy of national service. He emphasized that it was a day to celebrate the life and impact of Akeredolu rather than mourn his passing. Tinubu praised Akeredolu for his dedicated service to humanity and his indelible blueprint in the sands of history.
The Bishop of Ikwerre and Archbishop of Niger Delta Province, Anglican Communion, Blessing Enyindah, delivered a sermon titled “The Brevity of Life” during the church service. He reminded attendees of the transient nature of life and urged politicians to address the hardships facing Nigerians. Enyindah highlighted Akeredolu’s contributions to Ondo State and urged the government to continue the projects he had initiated but could not complete.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa expressed his gratitude for the dignitaries who came to pay their last respects to his late principal. He described Akeredolu as a great man who would be remembered for his advocacy for the rule of law and good governance. Aiyedatiwa thanked the guests for honoring Akeredolu with their presence.
After the church service, Akeredolu was laid to rest at a private program attended strictly by family members. The former governor, aged 67, passed away on December 27, 2023, after battling prostate cancer. He had served as governor of Ondo State between 2016 and 2023 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In his sermon, Bishop Enyindah quoted from Psalm 39 vs 4-5, urging attendees to reflect on their legacy and the significance of their actions. He stressed the importance of making a meaningful impact while on earth and emphasized the need to prioritize service to humanity.
The burial ceremony was a solemn occasion as friends, colleagues, and dignitaries gathered to bid farewell to a leader who had dedicated his life to public service. Akeredolu’s legacy was celebrated, and his memory was honored by those who knew him.
In conclusion, the final burial ceremony of former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu was a poignant event that highlighted the brevity of life and the importance of leaving a lasting impact on society. The gathering of prominent figures and dignitaries to pay their respects underscored the profound impact Akeredolu had on his community and the nation. May his memory continue to inspire others to serve humanity selflessly and with dedication.
