President Bola Tinubu has taken a significant step towards improving primary healthcare in Nigeria by approving the establishment of the National Health Fellows Programme. This initiative aims to upgrade existing primary healthcare centers and build over 8,800 new centers across all local government areas in the country. The carefully trained fellows will serve as fiduciary agents responsible for monitoring and tracking the development and performance of Primary Healthcare Centers. The fellowship program will be housed under the Sector Wide Approach coordination office within the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. Fellows will be recruited, remunerated, and provided with the necessary tools to track the performance of Basic Health Care Provision Fund-supported health facilities nationwide.
President Tinubu, who also serves as the African Union Champion for Human Resources in Healthcare, has shown faith in the capabilities of young Nigerians. He expects that their active involvement in monitoring and tracking health reforms in their respective areas will pave the way for an era of top-notch service provision to all Nigerians across the country.
