The town of Iwo, Osun, and its residents were plunged into a deep state of mourning as they bid farewell to one of their own, Quadri Oyebamiji, affectionately known as Sisi Quadri. On a Saturday, tears flowed freely as hundreds of sympathizers, including fellow theatre practitioners, gathered to witness his burial.
The emotional outpouring was palpable as mourners struggled to contain their sorrow at the loss of a beloved community member. The arrival of the deceased’s body at his residence in the Agbowo area of Iwo was met with an overwhelming presence of mourners, all unable to hold back their tears.
The somber occasion took a poignant turn as the body of Quadri Oyebamiji was laid to rest in the earth, following the completion of Islamic rites by Muslim clerics. The clock struck 1 pm, marking the final farewell to a cherished individual whose presence would be deeply missed.
In a conversation with reporters, Toyin Olaiya, the former governor of the Association of Nigeria Theater Art Practitioners in Osun State, revealed the circumstances leading to Quadri’s untimely passing. It was disclosed that Quadri fell ill while on a film shoot, resulting in his admission to Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso. Sadly, he breathed his last on a fateful Friday, leaving behind a legacy in the world of theatre.
Recalling his initial encounter with Quadri, Olaiya reminisced about the moment he first welcomed the talented actor into his theater group in 1996. The news of Quadri’s illness and subsequent demise came as a shock to Olaiya and his colleagues, as they had hoped for a swift recovery for their friend and mentee.
As Quadri’s health deteriorated, Olaiya had encouraged others from the theater community to visit him and offer their support. Despite the news of his transfer to a private medical facility in Iwo, no one could have predicted the tragic outcome that awaited Quadri.
Reflecting on the unexpected turn of events, Olaiya expressed his disbelief at the sudden loss of a valued member of the theater fraternity. The news of Quadri’s passing served as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the unpredictable nature of illness.
The legacy of Quadri Oyebamiji, known to many as Sisi Quadri, will endure through the memories of those who knew and loved him. His contributions to the world of theater and his impact on the community of Iwo will be cherished for years to come. As the tears of farewell dried, the spirit of Quadri lived on in the hearts of those who honored his memory on that solemn day in Iwo.
