The Supreme Court has taken an important action in a case involving the Adamawa state governorship election. A five-member panel of the Supreme Court led by John Okoro has reserved judgement in the appeal by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its Adamawa state governorship candidate, Aisha Dahiru (Binani) against the state governor, Ahmadu Fintiri. The matter has been adjourned for a final verdict after both parties involved in the case presented their arguments.

The main contention in the case is centered around the controversial declaration by the resident electoral commissioner, Hudu Ari. Binani, through her counsel, Akin Olujimi, argued that the declaration was lawful.

This decision comes after about nine months since the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Fintiri the winner of the 2023 gubernatorial election after a series of dramatic events played out.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja had previously affirmed Fintiri as the governor of Adamawa state and dismissed Binani’s appeal for lacking merit. The appellate court also awarded the cost of N500,000 in favor of Fintiri and the PDP against Binani.

The Supreme Court’s reserved judgement in this case is a significant development, and it underscores the importance of the legal process in resolving election-related disputes. As the case progresses, it will be closely watched by political observers and stakeholders in Adamawa and across Nigeria.
