After the Supreme Court upheld the second term election of Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun, he taunted his opponent, Ladi Adebutu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), by suggesting that they prepare for another political battle in 2027.

Speaking to journalists in his hometown of Iperu after arriving from Abuja following the Supreme Court’s ruling, Abiodun addressed the election petition tribunal filed by Adebutu and the PDP. The tribunal was filed due to their dissatisfaction with the outcome of the governorship election on March 18, 2023.

Governor Abiodun emerged as the winner of the poll with 276,298 votes, while Adebutu came in second with 262,383 votes, trailing the winner by 13,915 votes. Adebutu argued that a rerun of the poll should have been ordered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after the election was canceled in 99 polling units, which totaled over 40,000 voters – surpassing the margin of 13,915 votes.

However, the Supreme Court unanimously rejected Adebutu and the PDP’s plea for a rerun in the 99 polling units where elections were canceled.

In response, Governor Abiodun ridiculed the opposition, stating that the PDP cannot force a rerun now, and would have to wait until 2027, after he has completed his second term in office.

He emphasized his administration’s focus on sustaining its legacies and unveiling initiatives for the people of Ogun State, highlighting their achievements in contributing to the state’s economic growth.

Abiodun expressed gratitude to leaders of his party, particularly President Bola Tinubu, acknowledging their support in securing the election victory.

Overall, Governor Abiodun’s comments reflect his confidence in his administration’s performance and his resolve to continue working for the benefit of the people of Ogun State.
