The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, recently took a stand against the resurgence of the variant polio in the state by flagging off a routine vaccination campaign. Represented by the Waziri of Sokoto, Professor Wali Junaid, the Sultan emphasized the importance of ensuring that all children in the state were fully vaccinated during the exercise. He also expressed his gratitude to international agencies, particularly UNICEF, for their support in making vaccines readily available. However, he emphasized the need for the community to take responsibility for dealing with the virus and creating awareness about the importance of vaccination.

The Sultan referenced a sermon by Prophet Muhammad, highlighting the belief that every sickness has a remedy, including polio. He stressed the importance of maintaining cleanliness in order to prevent not only polio but also other diseases related to the environment. He lamented the lack of seriousness among some individuals regarding cleanliness, citing as an example the issue of people urinating on the streets, which he deemed unacceptable.

The Special Adviser on Primary Health Care Delivery Agency to the state governor, Bello Garba, expressed concern over the high number of new polio cases in Sokoto state, making it the worst-hit region in the country. He called on the residents, especially in the Sokoto North local government area, to actively participate in the vaccination campaign to address the issue. He also appealed to various authorities, including the Waziri of Sokoto, for their continued support in tackling the polio resurgence.

Dr. Abayowa Edukugbo of CSC AFNeT reiterated the agency’s commitment to reducing the polio variant by 80% by the end of the year and encouraged community members to participate in the vaccination program. UNICEF health specialist, Mrs. Tessa Rintala, reassured the state government and the Sultanate council of UNICEF’s unwavering support for the success of the vaccination campaign. She commended their efforts thus far but also urged them to continue encouraging public participation in the routine vaccination exercises.

The collective efforts of all stakeholders, including the government, health agencies, and the community, are crucial in combating the resurgence of polio in Sokoto state. By working together and prioritizing vaccination and cleanliness, the state can achieve the goal of eliminating polio once again. It is essential for everyone to heed the call for action and play their part in ensuring the health and well-being of the population.
