Ahead of the Supreme Court’s impending verdict on the Nasarawa state governorship election that took place on March 18, 2023, women from Nasarawa state have called on the court to maintain its independence and avoid succumbing to external influences.
Representatives from various organisations and civil society groups gathered in a staged protest at the Unity Fountain in Abuja on Thursday, January 18, to express their plea. The women emphasized the significance of the judiciary remaining impartial and free from external pressures.
During the demonstration, the women held up placards as a show of solidarity and support for a fair hearing at the apex court. Deaconess and evangelist Lydia Cletus Auta, representing the women, stressed that the people of Nasarawa state collectively voted for Hon. David Ombugadu. Auta warned that any verdict not in line with the people’s choice would not be acceptable.
The women urged the judiciary to resist any attempts at manipulation based on religious affiliations and emphasized the critical need for fairness and justice in the verdict. They called for a verdict devoid of external pressures and biased influences.
In managing the case, the authorities were implored to ensure transparency, openness, and a verdict that accurately represents public opinion. Additionally, the call was made for the judges to withstand external pressures and decide based on the merits of the case.
The women called on all Nigerians to stand in solidarity, emphasizing that the issue is not only about one election or one state but also about the integrity of the democratic process and the rights of every citizen to have their voices heard.
The Supreme Court’s verdict is expected to be delivered on Friday, January 19. The women urged their fellow citizens to maintain a peaceful and respectful demeanor as they await the unfolding of events in the legal arena.
