The State House in Abuja has taken steps to pay off its electricity debt to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC). This directive to clear the debt came from President Bola Tinubu and follows the reconciliation of accounts between the State House and AEDC, as stated in a press release signed by President Bola Tinubu’s special adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Tuesday.

The statement refuted the AEDC’s initial claim of a N923 million debt published in newspapers, revealing that the actual outstanding bill owed by the State House is N342,352,217.46, as per a letter from the management of AEDC to the State House Permanent Secretary dated February 14.

In light of the public outcry following the AEDC’s claim, President Bola Tinubu directed the immediate payment of the electricity bill to the AEDC. This was a pivotal move by President Tinubu in ensuring good governance and accountability within the government.

Rt Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to the President, has committed to ensuring that the debt is settled with AEDC before the end of the week following the satisfactory reconciliation between the two parties. Furthermore, he urged other Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to carry out similar reconciliations of their accounts with AEDC and promptly pay off their electricity bills.

It is important to note that the State House in Abuja is where the federal government is based, making it critical for the institution to maintain a good standing in matters concerning debt and payments.

The prompt action taken by the government in addressing this issue not only demonstrates a commitment to responsible financial management but also showcases transparency and accountability in the handling of public funds. This is particularly noteworthy in the context of Nigeria’s governance and its ongoing efforts towards promoting transparency and fiscal responsibility. President Bola Tinubu’s directive and the subsequent actions taken by the State House are in line with the principles of efficient and accountable governance.

This recent development should serve as an example to other government entities and organizations to fulfill their financial obligations and maintain transparent and trustworthy relations with service providers and stakeholders.

Furthermore, in the interest of good governance, it is essential for all government institutions, including the State House, to ensure proper management of their financial responsibilities and obligations. This includes timely payment of bills and debts in order to uphold the integrity and reputation of the federal government. President Bola Tinubu’s directive and the subsequent actions taken by the State House demonstrate a commitment to these principles, setting a standard for others to follow.

In conclusion, the initiative taken by President Bola Tinubu and the State House signifies a step in the right direction towards responsible financial management within the federal government. It highlights the importance of transparency, accountability, and timely payment of debts, and sets a precedent for other government institutions to uphold these principles in their financial affairs.
