Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai made headlines recently when he visited the Social Democratic Party (SDP) headquarters in Abuja. El-Rufai, a prominent member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), was seen meeting with SDP’s national chairman, Shehu Musa Gabam, sparking speculation on social media. However, El-Rufai’s spokesperson clarified that the visit had a different purpose than what was assumed by online commentators.
El-Rufai, known for his political acumen and involvement in national affairs, visited the Abuja National Secretariat of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on Wednesday, March 20. Reports indicated that he consulted with Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, the party’s National Chairman. El-Rufai, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and a key member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been actively engaging with various political stakeholders in recent times.
During the meeting, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam referred to El-Rufai as a political ally with a strong political background, emphasizing the importance of having transformative leaders like him in Nigeria. The visit was seen as a move towards fostering unity and collaboration among different political parties in the country, especially during a time when Nigeria is facing serious challenges such as insecurity, joblessness, and inflation.
El-Rufai, who has been rumoured to have interests in the presidential seat in 2027, was warmly welcomed by the National Working Committee (NWC) and other party members at the SDP headquarters. This meeting with SDP officials has further fueled speculations about his political ambitions and potential defection from the APC.
In response to the speculations surrounding El-Rufai’s visit, his spokesperson, Muyiwa Adekeye, debunked the rumours in a statement released on social media. Adekeye emphasized that El-Rufai remains a senior member of the APC and clarified that the visit to the SDP headquarters was not indicative of any defection plans. He highlighted El-Rufai’s significant contributions to the APC since its inception in 2014.
Meanwhile, the visit by the national security adviser Nuhu Ribadu to El-Rufai’s residence added a layer of intrigue to the political landscape. The timing of Ribadu’s visit coincided with rumours of El-Rufai’s potential departure from the APC, although the reasons for this speculation remain undisclosed. Nigerians have been closely watching these developments and expressing their thoughts on social media platforms.
Overall, El-Rufai’s visit to the SDP headquarters and the subsequent reactions from his spokesperson have shed light on the complexities of Nigerian politics and the ongoing dynamics within various political parties. As the country navigates through challenging times, the actions of political leaders like El-Rufai continue to shape the discourse and direction of the nation’s political landscape.
