Renowned playwright Professor Wole Soyinka has made some shocking allegations in regards to the 2023 general elections, claiming that there was a plot to annul the elections. He stated that this would have been a repeat of the annulment of the June 12, 1993 elections by the Ibrahim Babangida military government. Speaking on Channels Television, Soyinka expressed his concern about those who were advocating for an interim government, stating that they were repeating a historical mistake.

Soyinka also criticized the viral interview by the Labour Party’s vice presidential candidate, Datti-Baba Ahmed, labeling it as “menacing” and “disgraceful.” He specifically condemned the comments made in the interview and expressed his disagreement with the sentiments expressed.

He further alleged that there was a conspiracy from the beginning to ensure that the elections did not take place, or that if they did, everything would be reverted to what happened under Babangida. This was a troubling prospect for Soyinka, who firmly believed that history was about to repeat itself and that there were people determined to take the country back to those dark days.

Soyinka also mentioned that the competition was no longer about democracy but had become an individual pursuit of power. In his view, it was no longer a contest between individuals, but between the so-called interim political party and democracy itself.

In a separate report, Soyinka recounted details of his visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He described the president as “olorikunkun” for ignoring his advice not to run for the 2023 presidency. Soyinka expressed his dismay at Tinubu’s victory, stating that he would assess his administration after one year in office by 2024.

It is evident from Soyinka’s comments that he is deeply concerned about the political landscape and the future of democracy in Nigeria. His observations and allegations highlight the need for transparency and integrity in the electoral process to ensure that the will of the people is upheld.
