Prominent human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has made it clear that he cannot work with the Labour Party. Sowore explained that his political ideology is fundamentally different from that of the Labour Party and that he cannot align himself with the party. Sowore also stated that in his view, the Labour Party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are essentially part of the same group.

Sowore’s remarks were shared in a video posted on his verified social media account. He further revealed that he had received propositions to join the Labour Party led by Peter Obi, but he rejected them, citing several reasons for his decision.

On this matter, Sowore expressed, “I often tell the Labour Party people that they are not different from PDP and APC. We often argue because they are very visible on social media, and they would attack us all the time. So, one time that they reached me, asking me to join them, I said I can’t join the Labour Party – for a number of reasons.”

He went on to say, “One, the Labour Party is the party without workers. And that is the truth. And for those of you who know Airbnb, short rentals. The Labour Party is like a short rental. Labour Party is not a new party. The former governor of my state, Ondo (Segun Mimiko), was in Labour Party. He left the state worse than he met it. I told them that after the (2023) election, you will be shouting revolution. The next day after the (presidential) election, I woke up and ‘Revolution Now’ was trending.”

Sowore’s strong stance against the Labour Party stemmed from his belief that it does not represent real change or reform in the Nigerian political system. He accused the party of being more concerned with its publicity and social media presence than with genuinely addressing Nigeria’s deep-rooted political and social issues.

Readers may recall that Sowore is not new to the political scene and has been vocal about his activism and political aspirations. He has also been known for his previous involvement in helping Peter Obi overcome an impeachment plot by former president Olusegun Obasanjo. Sowore said that he had helped Obi and his party using documents that led to Obi’s emergence as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 election.

In his view, the Labour Party represents a facade that masks, in his words, “a party without workers.” He voiced his concerns that after the elections, the Labour Party members would be the ones calling for revolution, complaining that they had been cheated out of the system.

Sowore’s stance demonstrates his commitment to bringing about genuine transformation in Nigerian politics, and his unwillingness to compromise his beliefs for the sake of political expediency. His integrity and dedication to true change reflect a strong sense of leadership and principles that resonate with many Nigerians who desire meaningful and lasting improvements in their political system.
