In an effort to combat malnutrition, particularly among children in Sokoto State, the government has allocated five hundred million naira in the 2024 budget to address this issue. The Director of the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning in Sokoto, Mr. Buhari Umar, announced this allocation during a media roundtable event at the Pinnacle Guest Inn in Sokoto. The event, co-organized by UNICEF and CS-SUNN, aimed to educate journalists on the importance of advocating for increased government support to address malnutrition in the state.

Mr. Umar reassured that his ministry would ensure the timely release of the allocated funds and oversee their use for their intended purpose as outlined in the budget. He also called on journalists to hold the government accountable and ensure that budget allocations are implemented for the benefit of the state’s residents.

Dr. Goodness Anyanwu, the program manager for CS-SUNN, emphasized the role of the media in raising awareness about the prevalence of malnutrition, especially among children, and advocating for solutions. CS-SUNN has been at the forefront of advocating for improved nutrition over the past decade, with significant funding released last year and a push for even more funding this year.

Dr. Anyanwu stressed the need for collaborative efforts among NGOs, youth groups, community-based organizations, and academia to address malnutrition effectively. She highlighted CS-SUNN’s efforts to strengthen its capacity and engage with donor organizations to drive their vision forward.

The focus is on reversing the trend of malnutrition through targeted nutrition activities and partnerships. CS-SUNN is looking to replicate successful approaches in Sokoto State to empower partners to work towards a common goal.

By increasing investments in nutrition and mobilizing support from various stakeholders, including the media, government, and civil society organizations, Sokoto State aims to tackle the challenge of malnutrition and improve the well-being of its residents, especially children. Collaborative efforts and sustained advocacy are essential to address this pressing issue and create lasting impact in the fight against malnutrition.
