Vice President Kashim Shettima has emphasized the need for stronger collaboration and technology adoption in both the public and private sectors to further improve the business environment in Nigeria. He made this demand on Tuesday during the commencement of the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) 90-day Regulatory Reform Accelerator Action Plan. The plan aims to align with the commitment of the Tinubu administration to deliver impactful reforms and enhance the ease of doing business in the country by working with various government departments and agencies.
The Vice President pointed out that robust engagement and the deployment of relevant technology will help address the challenges faced by business operators both at the nation’s entry points and in the realm of business regulation. This signifies a clear recognition of the importance of technology in streamlining and improving business processes in Nigeria.
The 90-Day Regulatory Reform Accelerator is focused on eight key indicators that have been designed to foster growth across various industries, including the institutionalization of MDA-led reforms through Business Facilities Appraisal (BFA) 2022 compliance. These key indicators include the review and update on MDA Service Level Agreements, tracking of MDA Transparency Reforms, MDA Efficiency Reforms, Entry & Exit (Airport) Reforms, Port Operations Reforms, the facilitation of the National Single Window Project, AgroExport Reforms, and Manufacturing for Export Reforms.
It is worth noting that the implementation of this plan will be carried out in collaboration with stakeholders, and regular updates on the progress of the Accelerator will be provided by PEBEC.
Jumoke Oduwole, the Special Adviser to the President on PEBEC and Investment, emphasized the export-focused impact of the 90-day Accelerator, highlighting its potential to enhance productivity and competitiveness across key sectors. She stressed the urgency and purposefulness required to significantly improve the business climate in Nigeria, particularly in the current challenging times.
The 90-Day Regulatory Reform Accelerator Action Plan kick-off was preceded by an engagement session with PEBEC Priority MDA Reform Champions, during which the reform champions were briefed about the plan and its performance tracking mechanisms. These mechanisms include fortnightly performance tracking meetings and a town hall meeting to be hosted by the Vice President in the second quarter of 2024. This demonstrates the administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability in monitoring the progress of the reforms.
In attendance at the meeting were several government officials, including Justice Tijjani Abubakar (representing the Chief Justice of Nigeria), various Ministers, and Senate Committee Chairman Sadiq Umar, among others, underscoring the importance of the reforms across different sectors of the Nigerian economy.
Overall, the emphasis on stronger collaboration, the adoption of technology, and the implementation of the 90-day Regulatory Reform Accelerator Action Plan reflect the government’s commitment to fostering a conducive business environment and promoting economic growth in Nigeria. These efforts are integral to support the overall well-being of Nigerians and to ensure the country’s long-term economic sustainability in a global context.
