Former Senator Shehu Sani has issued a warning to President Bola Tinubu regarding the potential for protests to erupt among hungry and unorganized Nigerians. Sani’s warning comes in response to Tinubu’s criticism of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) protest that took place on February 27. Tinubu had expressed disapproval of the NLC’s actions, stating that organized labor had gone on strike four times in just nine months of his administration, which he deemed unacceptable.

Shehu Sani called on Tinubu to focus on preventing protests from the most vulnerable in society rather than criticizing the NLC’s actions. The NLC had organized a nationwide protest to highlight the hardships faced by Nigerians and to protest the government’s failure to honor agreements made in October 2023.

In response to Tinubu’s comments against the NLC, Shehu Sani took to Twitter to express his views on the matter. He emphasized that protests led by hungry and marginalized individuals are the most concerning, as they do not adhere to traditional means of organization and can erupt spontaneously without warning. Sani stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of such protests to prevent further unrest in the country.

During the commissioning of the Redline Rail project in Lagos, Tinubu had criticized the NLC for going on strike multiple times during his administration and warned against playing politics with his policies. He asserted that organized labor cannot challenge his government and suggested that they should wait until 2027 if they wish to engage in political activities.

Sani’s response to Tinubu’s remarks shed light on the potential dangers of ignoring the grievances of the most vulnerable in society. He emphasized the importance of addressing the underlying issues that lead to spontaneous protests among marginalized groups to prevent further unrest in the country.

In a separate incident, Shehu Sani criticized the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and major telecom companies such as MTN, Glo, and Airtel for their failure to support security agencies in combating kidnapping and terrorism. Sani highlighted the importance of utilizing phone numbers linked to the National Identification Number (NIN) to track down criminals and improve national security, urging the telecom companies to play a more active role in supporting law enforcement efforts.

Overall, Shehu Sani’s comments serve as a reminder of the need to prioritize the concerns of the most vulnerable in society and to address the root causes of social unrest to ensure stability and progress in Nigeria. It is essential for leaders like President Bola Tinubu to engage constructively with these issues and work towards finding comprehensive solutions that benefit all segments of society.
