Former Kaduna Senator Shehu Sani has voiced his disapproval of the recent criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration by Northern monarchs. He questioned why the traditional leaders had remained silent during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari and suddenly decided to speak out against Tinubu’s government.

In a post shared on his social media account, Sani accused the Northern Traditional Rulers of being one-sided in their criticism, saying, “For eight years, Northern Traditional Rulers lost their voice under Buhari; they have found it now.” His remarks came in response to comments made by the Chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, who had expressed concerns that Nigeria is sitting on a keg of gunpowder due to the economic hardship faced by its citizens. The Sultan made these comments during the 6th Executive Committee Meeting of the council with the theme: ‘Enhanced Security as a panacea for stability and development of the North,’ held at the Arewa House in Kaduna.

In addition, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, had requested the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, to communicate the current economic challenges facing Nigerians to the president. This further fueled the controversy surrounding the economic policies of the Tinubu-led government.

Moreover, Northern leaders, especially the monarchs, have been vocal about their displeasure towards Tinubu’s economic policies, which they believe have contributed to widespread hunger and hardship in the country.

Sani questioned the sudden change in tone from the Northern leaders, wondering why they had chosen to speak out against the current administration when they had remained silent during Buhari’s tenure. His comments bring to light the selective criticism of leaders within the government and the shifting alliances within political circles.

The former lawmaker’s remarks raise important questions about the political landscape and the role of traditional rulers in expressing dissent in a democratic society. His comments echo the sentiments of many Nigerians who are critical of the government’s economic policies and are looking for accountability from their leaders.

The unrest and dissatisfaction among Northern leaders signal a broader issue with the current state of affairs in Nigeria. There is a growing concern about the economic challenges faced by the country, and the differing opinions of leaders highlight the need for a unified approach to address these issues.

As Nigerians continue to grapple with economic hardship, the comments from the former Senator and the traditional rulers reflect the urgency for a collective effort to find solutions to the challenges facing the country. It is essential for leaders to work together to address the concerns of the people and focus on strategies to improve the economic conditions for all Nigerians.
