The Nigerian Senate has been embroiled in controversy as the opposition PDP has been accused of fueling crises within the legislative chamber. Senator Yemi Adaramodu, the Senate’s spokesman from the APC, made this assertion in response to the PDP’s call for the resignation of Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President. Adaramodu condemned the move by the party and strongly refuted the claims of budget padding in the 2024 budget.

On Thursday, March 14, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, the chairman of the Senate committee on media, addressed the demands made by the PDP for the resignation of Senate President Godswill Akpabio. This call for resignation came after Senator Abdul Ningi from the PDP in Bauchi Central resigned earlier in the week due to a three-month suspension imposed by the Senate. Ningi faced suspension after alleging that the 2024 Appropriation Act was padded with N3.7 trillion.

The PDP’s demand for Akpabio’s resignation was based on Ningi’s allegation of budget padding that was untraceable to any project under Akpabio’s watch. However, Senator Adaramodu stated in Abuja that Akpabio had no intention of resigning, as he had not committed any wrongdoing to warrant such action. He criticized the PDP for their calls for resignation and described them as “massaging balm for falsehood and immoral legislative outbursts.”

Adaramodu emphasized that no amount of lies and fake allegations would distract the 10th Senate, under Senator Godswill Akpabio, from delivering good legislation and effective oversight for which Nigerians elected them. He reiterated that the claims of budget padding were false and aimed at creating discord within the Senate.

In a related development, Senator Shehu Sani provided details on how lawmakers carry out budget padding within the Senate. He explained how budgetary items are inflated compared to the original budget proposed by the presidency. This revelation sparked criticism from internet users, who condemned the Senate’s practices of budget padding.

Overall, the Nigerian Senate has been embroiled in controversy as allegations of budget padding and calls for resignation have marred its proceedings. The response from the Senate’s spokesman, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, has been to refute these claims and emphasize the commitment of the Senate to provide quality legislation and oversight for the Nigerian people. The opposition PDP’s role in fueling these crises has been criticized, and the Senate under Senator Godswill Akpabio’s leadership remains focused on its legislative responsibilities.
