In a statement released in Abuja on Saturday, the Chief Whip of the Senate, Sen. Ali Ndume, urged the Federal Government to reconsider its decision to increase electricity tariffs, citing the ongoing challenges faced by Nigerians. Ndume expressed concern over the timing of the tariff increment, which came shortly after the removal of fuel subsidy, stating that Nigerians are still struggling to recover from the impact of that decision.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) recently approved a tariff hike for Band A consumers, allowing Distribution Companies (DisCos) to raise electricity prices from N68 to N225 per kilowatt-hour effective from April 1, 2024. Ndume highlighted the various challenges faced by Nigerians, including high inflation, limited purchasing power, insecurity, and other hardships.

He called on the Federal Government to prioritize providing stable electricity, reducing inflation, stabilizing the naira, lowering food prices, and ensuring access to basic amenities before implementing the tariff hike. Ndume emphasized the need for consultation with the National Assembly, as representatives of the people, before making such decisions.

The senator expressed his surprise at the announcement of the tariff increment, as it coincided with a break in the National Assembly session. He emphasized that the timing of the hike was inappropriate given the current economic hardships faced by Nigerians. Ndume acknowledged that many citizens are still reeling from the effects of the fuel subsidy removal and the high inflation rates.

He pointed out that the lack of consultation with lawmakers and the general public before implementing the tariff increase was unfair. Ndume emphasized the need for the government to consider the financial burden on the population, particularly in light of the existing challenges such as high inflation and stagnant minimum wage.

Furthermore, Ndume stressed the importance of prioritizing the well-being of Nigerians by improving access to stable electricity, reducing inflation rates, stabilizing the national currency, and addressing the high cost of essential goods. He called on the Federal Government to focus on enhancing the purchasing power of the people before imposing additional financial burdens.

Ndume also appealed for greater collaboration between the government and the National Assembly to ensure that decisions affecting the populace are made in consultation with their elected representatives. He emphasized the imperative for policymakers to understand the challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians and to act in their best interests.

In conclusion, Sen. Ali Ndume’s plea to the Federal Government to reconsider the hike in electricity tariffs underscores the need for a more comprehensive approach to addressing the economic challenges facing the country. With a focus on improving the well-being of the citizens and consulting with their representatives, the government can work towards a more sustainable and inclusive economic policy framework.
