The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is set to face a change in leadership before the 2027 general elections, with former Ogun state governorship candidate Dr. Segun Showunmi expressing his intentions to lead the party. In an exclusive interview with Legit.ng, Showunmi discussed his plans to transform the party, highlighting the need for an overhaul and reformation of the party’s structure and principles.

Showunmi believes that the PDP is in need of a complete reformation, particularly in addressing its zoning principles, which he describes as distorted. He emphasized the importance of restructuring the party to align with its original modules and principles, and stressed the need for a principled and ideological approach rather than business as usual. Showunmi also noted the need for reviving the dormant zones within the party and highlighted the importance of finding a personality with the passion and constancy to lead the party away from its current state.

In discussing his reformation agenda for the party, Showunmi emphasized the need for a reliable and bankable membership registrar, encouraging members to pay their dues to raise funds for the party. He also stressed the importance of robustly increasing effort in the party’s reconciliation framework to address internal conflicts at various levels within the party structure.

Showunmi’s vision for the PDP is focused on transforming the party into an ideological platform that is attractive to aspiring leaders genuinely willing to serve the people. He expressed his passion for redefining the party’s democratic values and criticized the business-as-usual approach adopted by other potential leaders within the party.

In a separate report, a prominent member of the PDP in Ebonyi state has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the focus on policies beneficial to the people as his primary motivation. Peter Ede’s defection has brought a substantial following from the PDP to the APC, representing a significant blow to the opposition party in the region.

Dr. Segun Showunmi’s vision for the PDP represents a significant shift in leadership and direction for the party. His focus on reformation and a principled, ideological approach suggests a departure from the status quo and presents a new vision for the party’s future. As the PDP prepares for the 2027 general elections, Showunmi’s leadership may bring about a transformation that aims to reinvigorate and strengthen the party’s position in Nigerian politics.
