Uche Secondus has recently made scathing remarks about Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), accusing him of being dishonest and spreading half-truths. Secondus, a former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), described Wike as “Nigeria’s most transactional politician” known for his double-speaking tendencies.
The feud between Wike and his successor, Siminalayi Fubara, has escalated into a crisis over the control of political structures in Rivers state. The state assembly initiated an impeachment plot against Governor Fubara in October 2023.
In response to Wike’s criticism of revered political leaders in Rivers state, Secondus, along with other prominent figures like Abiye Sekibo, Celestine Omehia, and Austin Opara, declared their support for Fubara and sought President Bola Tinubu’s intervention to caution Wike. Wike retaliated by labeling Sekibo, Secondus, Omehia, and Opara as “expired politicians” unworthy of being called elder statesmen.
Secondus, through his media adviser Ike Abonyi, issued a statement condemning Wike’s performance at a media engagement as a display of his inclination to manipulate the truth, spread half-truths, and fabricate falsehoods to deceive the public. He criticized Wike for playing to the gallery and garnering unwarranted attention through such tactics.
In a further critique, Secondus referred to Wike as a showman known for his double-speak and distortion of facts to gain political advantage. He expressed disappointment in Wike’s derogatory remarks about the revered political leaders of Rivers state, characterizing them as transactional politicians, political vampires, and political buccaneers.
Fubara, on the other hand, explained that he agreed to implement a peace agreement brokered by Tinubu out of respect for the president and warned his detractors not to underestimate him. The governor emphasized that his compliance with the agreement was solely due to his regard for Tinubu.
The ongoing conflict between Wike and his political allies highlights the intense power struggle within the political landscape of Rivers state. As the feud continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how it will impact the governance and stability of the region.
Overall, the discord between Wike and Secondus underscores the deep-seated tensions and rivalries that exist within Nigerian politics, shaping the dynamics of power and alliances among key political figures. The clash of personalities and interests in Rivers state reflects the complex nature of Nigerian politics and the challenges of navigating its intricacies.
