A remarkable medical achievement occurred in Saudi Arabia, where a dedicated team of medical professionals successfully separated conjoined Nigerian twins, Hassana and Huseina. The Saudi Arabian embassy in Nigeria made the announcement in a statement released on Friday. The meticulous planning and execution of the procedure began on Thursday morning and were met with success.
The twins, who had arrived in Riyadh on October 31, 2023, underwent comprehensive examinations that revealed shared areas in the lower abdomen, pelvis, lower spine, and lower spinal nerves. This detailed assessment allowed the medical team to strategize and execute the separation surgery effectively.
The separation surgery took place at the King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital in King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh. This landmark achievement was made possible through the directives of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud and His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
The surgical intervention unfolded in nine planned stages and lasted approximately 14 hours. A team of 38 consultants, specialists, technicians, and nursing staff who specialized in anesthesia, pediatric surgery, urology, orthopedics, plastic surgery, and pediatric neurosurgery collaborated seamlessly to ensure the success of this complex operation.
This surgery marked the 60th operation undertaken by the Saudi program for separating Siamese twins, a program that has provided care for 135 conjoined twins from 25 countries over the past 34 years. Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, Advisor at the Royal Court, Supervisor General of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief), and head of the medical team, expressed confidence in the success of the procedure, noting a 70% success rate.
Dr. Al Rabeeah extended heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the Saudi leadership for its unwavering support of the program. The successful separation of Hassana and Huseina highlights the Kingdom’s commitment to advancing medical science and providing compassionate healthcare on a global scale.
The Saudi medical and surgical team showcased their expertise and dedication in achieving this remarkable feat. The collaborative effort between medical professionals from various fields exemplifies the importance of teamwork and specialized care in achieving successful outcomes in complex medical procedures.
This successful separation surgery not only marks a significant milestone in the medical field but also serves as a symbol of hope and compassion in providing healthcare to those in need. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s commitment to supporting medical advancements and providing care to individuals from diverse backgrounds is commendable and sets a positive example for global healthcare initiatives.
