The King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital of King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, achieved a significant medical milestone by successfully separating Nigerian conjoined twins, Hassana and Husaina. The twins were joined at the chest and shared vital organs, making their separation a complex and challenging procedure.
The news of the successful separation was announced by Mohammed Alsahabi, the Press Attache’ at the Saudi Arabia Embassy in Abuja. The story of Hassana and Husaina had captured the hearts of millions worldwide, shedding light on the critical need for specialized medical attention for the twins.
The landmark achievement was made possible by a Saudi medical and surgical team, working under the directives of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud and Prime Minister Prince Mohammed bin Al-Saud. The surgery, which began on a Thursday morning, was the result of meticulous planning and execution by a dedicated team of medical professionals.
The twins arrived in Riyadh on October 31, 2023, and underwent detailed examinations revealing shared areas in the lower abdomen, pelvis, lower spine, and lower spinal nerves. The surgical intervention was carefully planned in nine stages, lasting approximately 14 hours.
A team of 38 consultants, specialists, technicians, and nursing staff with expertise in anesthesia, pediatric surgery, urology, orthopedics, plastic surgery, and pediatric neurosurgery collaborated seamlessly to ensure the success of the operation. This surgery marked the 60th operation undertaken by the Saudi program for separating conjoined twins, providing care for 135 twins from 25 countries over the past 34 years.
Before the procedure began, Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, Advisor at the Royal Court and head of the medical team, expressed confidence in the success of the separation, citing a 70% success rate. He extended his gratitude to the Saudi leadership for their unwavering support of the program.
“The successful separation of Hassana and Husaina exemplifies the Kingdom’s dedication to advancing medical science and providing compassionate healthcare on a global scale,” Dr. Al Rabeeah stated.
