The disengaged staff of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, staged a protest at the hospital premises on Friday in response to the management’s decision not to reverse the layoff of more than 1,500 workers. The federal government had laid off these employees due to alleged irregularities in their recruitment process.
The protesters were demonstrating against a circular issued by the hospital management to conduct examinations for specific cadres who would be considered for reemployment. The demonstration led to the blockade of the main gates of the hospital, obstructing the movement of people and vehicles in and out of the complex.
Samson Falope, one of the disengaged staff members, highlighted that the circular announced an examination scheduled for March 9 at the Command Day Secondary School, Army Barrack, Ede, Osun. He emphasized that the release of the circular for recruitment under the June 2022 waiver prompted the protest, with notifications sent to the relevant ministry, House of Representatives, and National Assembly for intervention and resolution. The protesters hoped for the indefinite suspension of the examination.
In response, the Public Relations Officer of OAUTHC, MKemi Fasoto, informed the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare would proceed with conducting the examination as planned.
The protest action underscores the frustrations and concerns of the affected employees regarding the layoff and subsequent recruitment process. Amidst the turmoil, the protestors are seeking support and resolution from governmental authorities to address their grievances.
As the situation unfolds, the ability of the government and hospital management to engage with the disengaged staff, address their concerns, and find an amicable solution will be crucial. The disruptive nature of the protest highlights the urgency of resolving the issues to restore normalcy and ensure the well-being of both the employees and the healthcare services provided by the hospital.
In conclusion, the protest at OAUTHC signifies a critical juncture in the ongoing dispute between the disengaged staff and the hospital management over the layoff and subsequent recruitment process. The resolution of these issues will be pivotal in determining the future course of action and relationship between the employees and the hospital authorities. The stakeholders involved must collaborate and communicate effectively to resolve the situation and ensure the continuity of essential healthcare services.
