The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has emphasized the importance of boosting routine immunization in Nigeria to eradicate polio and childhood killer diseases. Despite the country being declared polio-free, UNICEF is urging stakeholders to continue immunizing children from 0 to 5 years old to ensure that the progress is maintained.

UNICEF believes that strengthening the healthcare system and prioritizing routine polio immunization are crucial for child survival. It is essential for all children under 5 to receive the necessary vaccines to protect them from preventable diseases. Collective efforts from various stakeholders are needed to achieve this goal.

During a recent media briefing and orientation on the polio campaign organized by UNICEF in collaboration with the Kano State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Mr. Michael Banda, the Officer in Charge of UNICEF’s Kano office, highlighted the importance of supporting the primary healthcare system. UNICEF is committed to ensuring that there is at least one functional Primary Healthcare Center (PHC) in each Local Government Area (LGA) in Kano, Katsina, and throughout the country.

Mr. Michael also emphasized the significant role of the media as partners in progress. The media can help combat misinformation about vaccines and encourage parents to have their children vaccinated to build immunity against childhood killer diseases. Public education and enlightenment are essential in ensuring that the community is well-informed about the importance of immunization.

The Director General of Kano State Primary Healthcare Management Agency, Muhammad Mahmoud, stressed the need for public education and enlightenment. It is crucial for the community to understand the benefits of routine immunization and the impact it can have on children’s health and survival. By working together and raising awareness, we can ensure that all children have access to life-saving vaccines.

In conclusion, UNICEF’s efforts to promote routine immunization in Nigeria are vital in eradicating polio and childhood killer diseases. Continued support from stakeholders, including the media and community leaders, is essential in ensuring that all children under 5 receive the necessary vaccines. By prioritizing routine polio immunization and strengthening the healthcare system, we can make significant progress in protecting children’s health and well-being in Nigeria.
