The Rotary International President, Gordon Mclnally, is set to embark on a three-day working visit to Nigeria starting from Friday, bringing with him a fresh donation of $7 million for the eradication and prevention of diseases. This latest grant comes on the heels of a previous donation of US$14 million made by Rotary through the WHO to Nigeria for technical assistance in polio surveillance.
In addition to the financial support for disease prevention, Nigeria has also received a US$2 million grant from Rotary for the improvement of maternal and child health. It is evident that Rotary is committed to supporting Nigeria in various areas of healthcare and disease control.
During his visit, Mclnally is expected to meet with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to discuss further areas of assistance in disease control, child health, and maternal health. This meeting aims to strengthen the ties between the Federal Government of Nigeria and Rotary International.
According to the Coordinator of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), Prof. Emmanuel Dolapo Lufadeju, and the Co-coordinator, Dr. Goddy Nnadi, the visit will enhance the partnership between the Nigerian government, WHO, UNICEF, and other stakeholders. Rotary International, as a leading humanitarian organization with over 1.5 million members worldwide, plays a pivotal role in global health initiatives, including the eradication of polio in Nigeria.
The statement released by the LOC highlighted the significance of Nigeria as a priority nation for Rotary International. Nigeria is recognized as a priority country in Africa and the world due to its growing membership and contributions to humanitarian causes. With the country set to have six Rotary districts by 2024, it will become the country with the highest number of districts in Africa, underscoring its commitment to humanitarian giving.
In addition to the financial support provided by Rotary, Rotarians are actively involved in the implementation of projects in Nigeria, collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Health, state ministries of health, and other national and international partners. This collaborative effort is crucial in ensuring the success of healthcare initiatives in the country.
Overall, the visit of Gordon Mclnally to Nigeria is seen as a step towards strengthening the partnership between Rotary International and the Nigerian government in tackling healthcare challenges and improving maternal and child health. The support from Rotary will go a long way in achieving the goal of disease eradication and prevention in Nigeria.
Additionally, the statement emphasized the importance of Nigeria as a strategic partner for Rotary International, showcasing the country’s commitment to humanitarian causes and its significant contributions to global health initiatives.
