The Rivers State GrassRoots Development Initiative (GDI) leaders, established by former Governor Nyesom Wike, issued a warning to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for interfering in state politics. This warning came after a meeting with Governor Siminalayi Fubara at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
During the meeting, Hon. Collins Onuwo, a former Chairman of the Coordinators Forum of the GDI, addressed the issue. He stated that several members of the GDI, including Coordinators from various local government areas, had resigned to join others who had previously left the group. The GDI was initially formed by Governor Wike and played a crucial role in his election and reelection.
However, the members expressed their decision to no longer be part of the GDI, citing their desire to stand with the people of Rivers State. They emphasized that the interest of the state was their top priority. In the past, the GDI supported Governor Wike in his bid for office, despite challenges and opposition from outside forces. They recalled instances where they fought for Rivers State’s interests, including protecting votes and ensuring fair elections.
The group highlighted Governor Fubara’s election, which was affirmed by the Supreme Court as peaceful and legitimate. They commended the absence of violence during the election process and reiterated their commitment to safeguarding the democratic process in the state.
Furthermore, the GDI leaders emphasized the importance of unity among the people of Rivers State. They stated that any attack on a youth in the state would be considered an attack on the entire community. They pledged their support to individuals like Edison Ehie, who stood for truth and justice, even in the face of adversity.
The leaders concluded their statement by reaffirming their dedication to Rivers State and its residents. They urged all citizens, particularly the youth, to stand together in the face of challenges and threats to the state’s sovereignty. Their message emphasized the need for solidarity and vigilance in protecting the democratic rights of the people of Rivers State.
In essence, the GDI leaders’ warning to the FCT Minister serves as a reminder of the commitment to upholding the values of democracy and ensuring the welfare of the state’s citizens. Their decision to dissociate from the GDI signifies a new chapter in their dedication to serving the people of Rivers State and safeguarding their interests above all else.
