The House of Representatives Public Account Committee (PAC) has taken decisive action by summoning the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Olayemi Cardoso, to appear before it by Tuesday, March 5. The committee has made it clear that failure to comply may result in an arrest warrant being issued. This move came during an investigative hearing on revenue leakages in Abuja, chaired by Bamidele Salam.
Salam expressed disappointment with the governor’s handling of President Bola Tinubu’s reform agenda. He highlighted concerns over the governor’s reluctance to engage with the committee and the parliament on important matters. The committee stressed the importance of the CBN’s accountability to the legislative body and the Nigerian people.
During the hearing, the CBN governor had sent an Assistant Director, Ogbulu Peter, to represent him, which did not sit well with the lawmakers. The committee voiced its frustrations over the governor’s repeated absences and lack of cooperation. Salam emphasized the need for the CBN to be transparent and responsive to the parliament’s inquiries.
Salam raised doubts about the governor’s commitment to the success of President Tinubu’s administration and Nigeria’s economic recovery. He expressed concern over the governor’s priorities and his dedication to the country’s financial well-being. Salam highlighted the numerous letters sent to the CBN governor without adequate responses, indicating a pattern of disregard for the committee’s requests.
The committee demanded accountability and cooperation from the CBN governor in order to address the issues at hand and drive positive change in Nigeria’s financial system. Despite acknowledging his personal respect for the governor, Salam underscored the need for greater transparency and engagement in addressing national economic challenges.
The committee’s firm stance reflects a commitment to upholding accountability and ensuring that public officials fulfill their responsibilities to the Nigerian people. By holding the CBN governor to account, the committee aims to promote good governance and transparency in financial matters, ultimately working towards a brighter economic future for Nigeria.
As the deadline for the governor’s appearance approaches, all eyes are on the CBN and its commitment to working collaboratively with the committee to address revenue leakages and strengthen the country’s financial systems. The PAC’s actions serve as a reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency in government institutions, setting a precedent for responsible governance and effective oversight.
