The House of Representatives recently summoned the Minister of Blue Economy and Transport, Gboyega Oyetola, regarding the concession of port infrastructure in the country. Ibrahim Hamisu, the Chairman of the House Committee on Privatisation and Commercialisation, expressed concerns about the methodology used in the concession of seaport terminals during a meeting with seaport terminal operators in Abuja. He questioned the handling of the concession process, leading to the summoning of key officials involved in the process, including the Managing Director of the Nigeria Ports Authority, Muhammed Koko, the Director General of the Bureau of Public Enterprise, Mamman Ahmadu, and the Director-General of the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission, ICRC, Michael Ohiani.
Mr. Hamisu highlighted the poor handling of the concession process, noting that five companies had been operating without the renewal of their operating licenses for three years, resulting in a loss of significant revenue to the Federal Government. He emphasized the need to address the prolonged renewal process to attract investments into critical port infrastructure. The chairman stated the importance of swiftly addressing the concerns to benefit both stakeholders and the nation.
The House committee’s investigation revealed that the execution of negotiated Supplementary Agreements for the respective terminals was the remaining step in concluding the process that began over five years ago. By inviting all stakeholders to collaborate and find solutions, they aimed to resolve the issues in the mutual and national interest.
This development underscores the importance of efficient and transparent processes in the concession of port infrastructure. The proper handling of such agreements not only ensures the smooth operation of ports but also attracts investments and promotes economic growth. The summoning of key officials reflects the government’s commitment to holding responsible parties accountable and addressing shortcomings in the concession process.
It is crucial for the stakeholders involved to work together to resolve the issues and expedite the renewal process for operating licenses. By streamlining the concession process and ensuring compliance with regulations, the government can create a conducive environment for investment in critical port infrastructure. This, in turn, will benefit the economy and contribute to the overall development of the country.
In conclusion, the summoning of key officials over the handling of concession of port infrastructure highlights the importance of transparency, accountability, and efficiency in such processes. By addressing concerns and collaborating with stakeholders, the government can ensure the smooth operation of ports, attract investments, and drive economic growth. It is essential for all parties involved to work together towards finding solutions that benefit both stakeholders and the nation as a whole.
