The Discrimination against People with Disabilities Prohibition Act 2018, passed by the National Assembly, aims to safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities. Recently, there have been reports of discrimination against Mr Adebola Daniel at a KFC outlet in Lagos, highlighting the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in Nigeria. Mr Daniel shared his experience on social media, recounting his humiliating moment and emphasizing the broader consequences of such discriminatory actions. The Committee on Disability Matters is committed to investigating the issue and other related matters to ensure that such abuses and injustices against people with disabilities are no longer tolerated.
The committee is also dedicated to engaging with communities to kick start the full implementation of the Disability Act, including provisions for access to public buildings, employment quotas, and welfare promotion for persons with disabilities. The lawmakers aim to enhance the lives of persons with disabilities and prevent future incidents like Daniel’s through robust implementation of the Disability Act.
It is crucial for all establishments within the country, regardless of the owners’ status, to adhere to the provisions of the Disability Act and ensure that the rights of individuals with disabilities are upheld. The lawmakers are advocating for a more inclusive society where individuals with disabilities can access public spaces without facing discrimination or barriers.
In conclusion, the House of Representatives is calling for a concerted effort from state governments and MDAs to implement the Disability Act and protect the rights of individuals with disabilities. By enforcing key provisions and promoting inclusivity, the lawmakers aim to create a more accessible and respectful environment for people with disabilities in Nigeria.
