Reno Omokri, a former special assistant on digital media to former President Goodluck Jonathan, recently made an allegation against South African mobile network operator, MTN. Omokri claimed that MTN blocked some Nigerians from using their phones to invest, causing a significant disruption in service for many MTN subscribers. This incident occurred on Wednesday, February 29, when the service provider experienced a network outage.
In response to these events, Omokri urged Nigerians not to rely on these unreliable foreign services and instead emphasized the importance of using Nigerian networks such as Globacom. He asserted that supporting Nigerian networks like Glo can help contribute to the growth and development of the nation.
The outage experienced by MTN subscribers on that day was reportedly caused by multiple fibre cuts, leaving many customers stranded and seeking assistance at MTN offices. This disruption highlighted the consequences of relying on foreign services and the importance of investing in Nigerian telecommunications companies.
Omokri took to Twitter to express his views on the matter, stating that DSTV had previously blocked Nigerians from accessing certain content, and now MTN was hindering them from using their phones for essential tasks like browsing, calling, or investing. He urged Nigerians to support Nigerian networks and embrace local products and services to drive the growth of the economy. He suggested using Nigerian brands like Innoson, Nord, or Jet Motors, calling with Glo, and building with Dangote and BUA.
Furthermore, Omokri advised consuming locally made products such as breakfast with Nasco, lunch and dinner with made-in-Nigeria rice, and going on dates at local establishments like Tantalisers and Suya spots. He also encouraged drinking Zobo, celebrating with palm wine, flying with Nigerian airline Air Peace, shopping at local markets, and choosing cassava bread over foreign wheat bread.
Additionally, Omokri recommended supporting local entertainment and cultural industries, such as watching Enyimba and Kano Pillars, viewing Nollywood movies at Silverbird, streaming Nigerian music, and wearing traditional Nigerian attire like aso oke, agbada, babanriga, or isi agu. By patronizing and promoting Nigerian products and services, Omokri believes that individuals can contribute to the growth and prosperity of the nation.
In conclusion, the recent service outage experienced by MTN subscribers served as a reminder of the importance of supporting local businesses and networks. Omokri’s advocacy for using Nigerian services and products aligns with his vision of driving economic growth and prosperity in the country. As Nigerians navigate the challenges of unreliable foreign services, embracing local alternatives can help build a stronger and more resilient economy.
