Renowned public commentator Reno Omokri has raised concerns about the Labour Party’s recent election, which saw Julius Abure elected as the national chairman. Omokri has described this election as a “kangaroo primary” and has accused both Peter Obi and Abure of “playing God” in preparation for Nigeria’s presidential election in 2027.

Omokri criticized the decision of the Labour Party to reserve its 2027 presidential ticket for Peter Obi, who is a former governor of Anambra State. He believes that Obi should have to compete for the party’s presidential ticket rather than having it handed to him.

In a recent tweet, Omokri expressed his disappointment in the LP’s actions, stating, “Why will the Labour Party reserve its 2027 Presidential ticket for Peter Obi? In a democracy? When you have not even had a Presidential primary?” He went on to criticize the process of the primary election, alleging that it was riddled with vote buying to ensure that Obi’s preferred candidate emerged victorious.

Furthermore, Omokri believes that Obi should have to fight for the party’s presidential ticket, just like candidates in other political parties. He cited examples of past presidential primaries in parties like the APC and PDP, where candidates had to compete fiercely for the ticket.

Omokri also raised concerns about the LP’s decision to already be planning for the 2024 election when the 2027 election is still years away. He believes that this move is premature and that it is undemocratic for a party to reserve a ticket for a specific candidate without going through a proper primary process.

In response to the controversy surrounding the LP’s national convention and the election of Julius Abure as the national chairman, the Labour Party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) has intervened to take control of the party. This decision was made following the expiration of the tenure of the previous national working committee led by Abure.

Overall, Omokri’s criticisms shed light on the internal workings of the Labour Party and the larger political landscape in Nigeria. His concerns about the lack of democracy in the party’s decision-making processes and the alleged favoritism towards Peter Obi highlight the need for transparency and fairness in the country’s political system. As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 presidential election, it is crucial for political parties to uphold democratic values and ensure that candidates are selected through a fair and competitive process.
