Amidst the worsening hardship faced by many Nigerians, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) took a commendable step by selling rice to citizens at a cheaper rate. This initiative aimed to provide some relief to the struggling population. As a result of this development, numerous Nigerians flocked to Customs offices, particularly in Lagos state, to take advantage of the opportunity.

Tragically, in the midst of the rush to purchase the affordable rice from the Nigeria Customs Service in Lagos, a devastating stampede occurred. This stampede led to the untimely deaths of seven individuals, one of whom was identified as Funmilayo Comfort Adebanjo, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to reports by The Punch, the APC confirmed the passing of Adebanjo and six others due to the stampede at the Customs office in Yaba, Lagos. The incident occurred on Friday, February 23, following the flagging off of the sale of rice at a discounted price by Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, the NCS’ comptroller general.

Oluwafemi Fadahunsi, the coordinator of FKL Ward E1 in Lagos state, along with secretary Adebari Adewale, verified that Adebanjo was among the seven individuals who tragically lost their lives during the stampede. The news of this unfortunate event was also highlighted by New Telegraph.

In a heartfelt obituary released on Sunday, February 25, the APC expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Adebanjo and the other victims. The party mourned the loss of one of its members in FKL Ward E1, acknowledging the pain caused by the tragic incident at the Customs office in Yaba.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by many Nigerians, particularly in the current economic climate. The desire to access affordable food items reflects the harsh realities of daily life for a significant portion of the population.

In a related event, a student from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) shared her experience of purchasing discounted rice from the Customs office in a TikTok video. The student, motivated by adventurous friends, took advantage of a secret deal that allowed her to buy half a bag of rice for a mere 10,000 naira. This revelation further emphasizes the demand for affordable food options among the Nigerian populace.

The tragic stampede at the Customs office in Lagos underscores the urgent need for sustainable solutions to address the economic challenges and hardships faced by many citizens. As Nigeria grapples with widespread poverty and food insecurity, initiatives like the sale of affordable rice by the Nigeria Customs Service are crucial steps towards alleviating the plight of the people.

The loss of lives in this stampede is a stark reminder of the pressing need for government and societal interventions to ensure the well-being and safety of all Nigerians. May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may their families find the strength to cope with this irreparable loss.
