Despite the impeachment of the former deputy governor of Edo state, Philip Shaibu, he has found himself facing a fresh problem as part of his residential post was demolished by the Edo state government led by Governor Godwin Obaseki. This development came after Obaseki replaced Shaibu by appointing Marvellous Omobayo as the new deputy governor of Edo state.

On Sunday, April 14, the security post in front of Shaibu’s residence in the Government Reservation Area, Benin, was pulled down by officials of the Edo State State Network and members of the Public Works Volunteers. The security post, which shared the same fence with the golf course, served as a temporary shelter or first port of call for Shaibu’s security details before and after the close of work.

The fallout between Obaseki and Shaibu escalated after the Edo house of assembly accused Shaibu of leaking government secrets, leading to his impeachment on Monday, April 8. Following the impeachment, Governor Obaseki wasted no time in appointing Marvellous Godwins Omobayo as the new deputy governor of Edo state.

A senior member of the agencies involved in the demolition exercise explained that the security post was removed because Shaibu is now considered a private citizen and had lost the privilege of having such a structure. An aide to Shaibu expressed displeasure over the demolition, stating that the security outpost was not built by the government but by Shaibu himself.

In a surprising turn of events, the impeached deputy governor met with the acting chairman of the APC in Edo state, Emperor Jaret Tenebe, in Abuja, triggering rumors of defection. During the meeting, Tenebe denounced Shaibu’s impeachment as a sham, and Shaibu expressed confidence that his removal by the Edo State House of Assembly would not stand.

The demolition of Shaibu’s security post adds another layer to the ongoing cold war between him and the Edo state government. The decision to remove the structure underscores the intensifying rift between the former deputy governor and Governor Obaseki, highlighting the deep-seated animosity that exists between the two political figures.

As the saga continues to unfold, the political landscape in Edo state remains tumultuous, with Shaibu’s future and political aspirations hanging in the balance. The demolition of his security post symbolizes the eroding power and influence of the former deputy governor, signaling a definitive end to his chapter in Edo state politics.
