The Labour Party recently held its national convention on Wednesday, March 27, at the Grand Season Hotel in Nnewi, Anambra state. This convention took place in the midst of turmoil as the party had requested protection from the federal government against further hostilities from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). Despite the opposition from NLC’s Joe Ajaero, Barrister Julius Abure was re-elected as the national chairman of the Labour Party.

The re-election of Julius Abure as the national chairman of the Labour Party for a second term was met with unanimous affirmation from the delegates present at the convention. This decision comes after the NLC, led by Joe Ajaero, protested by shutting down activities at the LP secretariat and demanding the removal of Abure. The NLC’s members expressed their disapproval of the planned national convention of the Labour Party, which was scheduled for the end of the month.

The chairman of the National Convention, Mr. Ikechukwu Emetu, who is also the deputy governor of Abia state, declared Abure as the winner during the convention in Nnewi, Anambra state. This development occurred despite the NLC’s call for Abure’s dismissal, citing his alleged attempt to organize an unauthorized national convention in Abia state to secure his position as chairman.

In response to the NLC’s actions, the federal government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was urged to intervene and protect the Labour Party from further confrontations. The NLC has accused Abure of trying to cling to power by orchestrating an unapproved convention, leading to the ongoing rift between the two parties.

Meanwhile, Joe Ajaero, the president of the NLC, has denied allegations that he intends to run for the Nigerian presidency in 2027. Ajaero clarified that his involvement with the Labour Party is solely for the benefit of the party and to ensure a smooth transition within the organization. He emphasized that his engagement with LP politics is guided by a memorandum of understanding between himself, Ayuba Wabba, and Julius Abure.

The re-election of Barrister Julius Abure as the national chairman of the Labour Party amidst opposition from the NLC underscores the divisions within the Nigerian political landscape. Despite the challenges faced by the party, Abure’s continued leadership highlights his support among party delegates and members. The outcome of the convention signals a renewed determination within the Labour Party to navigate internal and external pressures while focusing on its political objectives.
